the design Process

INITIALLY

At our initial meeting, I spend time getting a clear understanding of your requirements by asking the right questions and listening to your responses to get a feel for the style of garden you are seeking and how you would like to use the space.

Now is the time to show me any photos or images you have seen or thoughts and ideas you have. Following this first meeting, I send you a written brief, setting out all that we have discussed, accompanied by a detailed fee quotation for each stage of the design process.

DESIGN

Site survey and analysis:

Prior to starting the design process I carry out a detailed survey of the existing plot. This stage provides me with an essential database of information including exact positions of boundaries, existing features and buildings, plot orientation and changes in level. A site analysis highlights beautiful distant views to be enhanced or less attractive ones to be screened, how light and shade fall through the day and the impact of neighbouring trees or buildings. I take photos and soil samples for analysis. For large or unusually complex sites, the survey may be done by a Chartered Land Surveyor.

Concept plan:
The design element of the process begins with a concept plan. I present to you, for discussion and feedback, a scaled drawing showing in concept the key elements so that you can get a feel for how the final design will look.
Detailed outline plan:

Once you are happy with the plan in concept, I prepare a detailed CAD design with a hand-rendered finish to really help you visualize the completed garden. I can provide 3D illustrations as well, should you so wish.

Planting plan :
By choosing each plant carefully to suit your specific garden conditions, personal taste and maintenance requirements, I create a unique plan tailored just for you.

BUILD

The Detailed Outline Plan, together with a Specification and Scope of Works and any construction drawings required, are packaged together and passed to landscapers as a basis for costing.   This comprehensive pack will ensure any potential contractor is crystal clear as to what is required.

Over the course of years, I have developed close working relationships with some great landscapers and other specialists, whom I can recommend to you. Or you may wish to engage your own preferred team. Either way, I am available throughout the build to liaise with contractors and monitor progress to ensure the garden is built exactly as planned.

AFTERCARE

Your beautiful new garden is complete and you can now enjoy it! Gardens evolve over time and I can provide a maintenance plan for you to help keep it looking its best.

I remain on hand at any stage following completion to answer queries and if requested, return periodically as the garden develops to offer advice.
